I worked with emotionally disabled adults on drawing from the still life. Rather than treat them differently, I set expectations that they lived up to: try, focus and practice. They rapidly learned to draw even though they were managing mood disorders, dyslexia, and other challenges. While drawing, they forgot about their symptoms, including tremors caused by medications. I exhibited the drawings to further encourage their self-esteem. Signage invited visitors to draw on site, creating community where division was once the norm. I was pleased to have to create a waiting list for the next workshop because the interest level was so high.
